Dismantling A Piano With My Father

Over the course of an afternoon the artist and his father dismantled the piano that had been situated in his family’s home since childhood. The resultant recordings of its dismantlement are played back through speaker coils attached to thepiano’s soundboard.

The work presents the dismantlement as a creative act, a joint effort between father and son. It draws on the acoustic and emotional resonances of the object and the juxtaposition of abrasive sound and domestic familiarity to reflect on notions of family and home.

Installed at Stoke Newington Studios for Gwaith Swn's A Second Hand group show, 2014.
